SUMMARY (FINAL TEST)

SUMMARY

CALL is the acronym for computer-assisted language learning. Although, as we will see below, the field of significant parts of it sometimes go by other names, CALL seems to be the most widely accepted generic term. call began in the 1960s with mainframe-based drill and practice materials, especially those based on the University of Illionis’ PLATO system. It remained an significant alternative for language learning outside of a few universities until the spread of the microcomputer into educational settings in the early 1980s. Early programs were written by teacher-developers on Apple II, IBM PC, and BBC computers, and were often distributed for free. Commercial programs technically sophisticated (though not as innovative). There where some work done with interactive laser disks during this time which provided the foundations for multimedia. The traditional language labs began to be replaced with dedicated computer labs for language learning, a trend that continues today. T shree phases of CALL

a. Behavioristic CALL

The first phase of CALL, conceived in the 1950s and implemented in the 1960s and ‘70s, was based on the then-dominant behaviorist theories of learning.

b. Communicative CALL

The second phase of CALL was based on the communicative approach to teaching which became prominent in the 1970s and early ‘80s. Proponents of this approach felt that the drill and practice programs of the previous decade did not allow enough authentic communication to be of much value.

c. Integrative CALL

· Steps toward integrative call: multimedia

Integrative approaches to call are based on two important technological developments of the last decade- multimedia computers and the internet. Multimedia technology – exemplified today by the CD- ROM –allows a variety of media (text, graphics, sound animation and video) to be accessed on a single machine. What makes multimedia even more powerful is that it also entail hypermedia . that means that the multimedia resources are all linked together and that learmerscan navigate their own path simply by pointing and clicking a mouse.

· Steps toward integrative call : the internet

Computer mediated communication (CMC), which has existed in primative form since the 1960s but has only became wide- spread in the last five years, is probably the single computer application to date with the greatest impact on language teaching.

Computer mediated communication allows users to share not only brief messages, but also lengthy (formated or unformatted ) documents – thus fasilitating colaborative writing colaborative writing- and also graphics, sound, and video. using the world wide web (www), students can search through millions of files around the world within minutes to locate and access authentic materials (e.g newspaper and magasine articles, radio broadcasts, short videos, movie reviews, book excerpts) exactly tailored to their own personal interests.

in practice, courseware, has been used to refer to everything from complete software packages that can be used without a teacher to software that is just a part of a language learning course, sometimes a minor or optimal suplementary part.

Although CALL courseware has arguably lost its dominant position in CALL over the past decade , it is still widely used and continues to be a significant part of the field.

three modules development evaluation and implementation.

· Evaluation module is a crucial aspect to understand what the courseware does first before attempting to judge it: this is, not surprisingly, difficult to do because as soon as we start interacting with a program we want to judge it.

· Development module refers to the process of going from the idea of creating a piece of tutorial software through the final product. It should be informed by general principles of instructional design.

· Implementation module consideration are relevant during the evaluation process, but they come crucial when deciding how best to use software that is available.

the research question of Saadiyah’s research

· What are the teachers’ attitudes towards teaching English using computers?

· What are the challenges faced by teachers in using computers to teach English?

· What are the teachers’ suggestions in order to overcome these challenges?

finding of Saadiyah’s research

Motivation, attitude, and school culture as contributing factor.

Due to both the history of Technology development and the ease of text use, most CMC has been done using the medium of text. We will look at the text uses both for their own value and as a vehicle for introducing concept relevant to audio and video based CMC.

Asynchronous text. The first use of CMC in language teaching almost certainly came through email exchanges from teachers to students and among students within classes. Email is an example of asynchronous communication, in that the interaction is not in real time. You create and send an email, and the recipient typically gets it within second but may not read it or respond until much later. Under such circumstances, there are clear differences between email and conversation that go beyond the use of text as a medium.

Synchronous text. With Synchronous text, or chat, the messages are exchanged in text form, but in real time. Some of the early research on CMC was built around a type of chat program, InterChange, that was part of the Daedalus Integrated Writing Environment system (www.daedalus.com). Student could carry out synchronous discussion in a computer classroom using this tool.

Web-Based Language Learning Activities is Language Learning that involves the use of the web and and exploits Web materials, resources, applications or tools (Son, 2007). Given that WBLL occurs with Web activities on the web, its important to use well-designed WBLL activities to maximize language learning.

puisi

bintang-bintang benderang begitu seksi
semua begitu nyata
di balik punggung gua menghampar pasir-pasir pesisir yang berfikir
membaca kejanggalan yang ditetapkan
SEGARA berubah rasa
tak lagi garam menyengat
lidah mati tak mencicip rasa
semuanya tawar.
